Chapter One: The Discovery

The letter arrived on a Tuesday, slipped beneath the door of Eleanor's flat like a secret unwilling to keep itself. She might have missed it entirely — she often did, stepping over the small accumulations of post — had it not been for the colour of the envelope: a deep, arterial red…

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the AI write my book for me?

No. Every word in your manuscript is yours. No 5 Writer’s™ AI plays the same roles a human editorial team would: a developmental editor who questions your structure, a copy editor who tightens your prose, a beta reader who tells you where they got confused. It coaches, challenges, and supports your writing. It never writes it for you.

Do I have to follow the genre template?

Not at all. The genre templates give you a proven structural starting point, but you can rearrange chapters, rename beats, add or remove sections, and ignore any guidance that doesn’t serve your story. You can also start from a completely blank page and build your own structure from scratch. The framework is a scaffold, not a cage.

How does the research feature work?

Select text in your manuscript and click Research, or type a query directly. No 5 Writer™ searches the web for relevant information, aware of what chapter you’re working on, and returns sourced results in a slide-over panel. Save any result as a research note. Open a saved note later to review it, copy it into your manuscript, or ask follow-up questions that build on what you already found. Your research lives alongside your writing, not in a separate app.

What happens to my writing? Is it used to train AI?

Your manuscript, characters, notes, and research are stored in your private database. They are never used to train AI models. When you chat with an AI coach, your conversation context is sent to the AI provider to generate a response, but it is not stored or used for training. You own your work completely.

Can I export my manuscript?

Yes. Export your full manuscript or individual chapters as properly formatted DOCX files, ready for agents and publishers. Screenplays export as industry-standard PDF in Courier 12pt format. You can also generate an AI-assisted book proposal with query letters, synopses, and market analysis, all drawn from what you’ve actually written.

What’s the difference between the AI coaches?

Each persona brings a different editorial lens. The Acquiring Editor evaluates whether your premise has market potential. The Developmental Editor focuses on structure, pacing, and character arcs. The Copy Editor works at the sentence level on voice and clarity. The Literary Agent helps with proposals and submission strategy. The Beta Reader gives you honest reader reactions. The Script Consultant guides visual storytelling, dialogue subtext, and screenplay conventions. Switch between them as your project evolves.

What types of writing does this support?

Fiction, nonfiction, and screenwriting. No 5 Writer™ includes genre templates for mystery, thriller, romance, literary fiction, fantasy, and science fiction on the fiction side, memoir, self-help, and business on the nonfiction side, and feature film, TV pilot, and stage play for screenwriting. That’s 26 genre templates in total, each built around how that specific form works. Nonfiction projects use “case studies” instead of characters, screenwriting projects use scenes instead of chapters, and the AI coaches adapt their feedback accordingly.

What if I’m not sure what genre my book is?

Start with the closest match. The genre template gives you a structural starting point, but you’re free to modify it as your project takes shape. You can also start with a blank page and build your own structure entirely. The AI coaches work with whatever structure you create.

Your story is waiting.

Start with a premise. End with a finished draft.
